Although Alberto Ginastera composed many works for the piano, this study will only address his sonatas. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, Ginastera’s collection of sonatas displays a broad spectrum of his compositional technique and harmonic language and also tracks the evolution of his compositional style, making it a suitable representation of his piano music and a perfect subject for a performance guide to his music. Secondly, the comparison of the popular first sonata and the relatively-unknown Second and Third Piano sonatas makes this performance guide an opportunity for performers to more fully explore Ginastera’s piano output. The objectives of this study are: 1) to provide a detailed performance guide for pianists who are exploring Ginastera’s piano works, especially focusing on, though not limited to, his sonatas, and 2) to encourage fellow pianists to include these works in their repertoire, especially the under-played Piano Sonatas nos. 2 and 3. In order to achieve these goals, this study examines these sonatas in depth, both historically and musically, and includes a recording of the First Piano Sonata by the author as an addendum to the study.
This book introduces the three piano Sonatas of Carl Vine who is one of worldwide famous Australian living composer. Carl Vine writes and expresses his piano sonatas in such a way that they have become noticeable virtuosic monuments. The three piano sonatas employ the entire range of the keyboard, a wide range of dynamic expression, energetic and motoric rhythmic motion, and free and fluid fast passages with recognizable melody lines. After enjoying the learning process and performance experience with the second piano sonata in particular, it is to share performance and practice suggestions, which will lead to the best interpretation and performance of this sonata. In addition, an interview with the composer, Carl Vine, enables the performer and other musicians to understand his thought and compositional process. An observation of the compositional style of his piano sonatas shows how well he understands piano. Due to his own personal experience as a pianist, his three piano sonatas are playable under a pianist’s hands in spite of some difficult techniques.
Though it is common knowledge that Niccolo Paganini was one of the greatest violin virtuosos who has ever lived, it is not as widely known that he was also an accomplished guitarist. He wrote many sonatas for violin and guitar, and he also included the guitar in several quartets and trios. Though he also composed many pieces for solo guitar, they are, unfortunately, of very little musical value and they certainly do not exploit the technical possibilities of the instrument in the same way in which Paganini exploited the violin's. These two short sonatas, extracted from his collection of sonatas for violin and guitar Op. 3, are not really sonatas in the classical sense at all. They both begin with a beautiful cantabile opening, followed by two short and fast movements of great technical brilliance. In the original scores the violin does all the melodic work while the guitar is relegated to very simple accompaniments. With these transcriptions it was my intention to create two solo guitar pieces by Paganini that would embody all of the charm and technical wizardry of his style.
'Forgotten Russian Piano Music' is a historical and analytical study that focuses on the piano sonatas of Anatoly Aleksandrov (1888-1982), the longest-living Russian and Soviet composer-pianist of the twentieth century. The fourteen piano sonatas, written between 1922 and 1971, reflect not only the composer’s evolution of style, but also reveal the vast array of influences which characterize the music of the twentieth century. Strong melodic lyricism that threads these epic compositions, rich writing for piano, combined with modern chromaticism and hints of Russian folklore all contribute to the composer’s original style, which synthesizes Aleksandrov’s four main figures of influence, namely Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Medtner, and Feinberg. Additionally, the study explores the measure of Aleksandrov's professional success as he was working contemporaneously with such highly established composers as Prokofiev and Shostakovich.
